Chapter 8
I gave Ren the coldest look I could muster. Iâd been giving him the cold shoulder since yesterday. After he blabbed about my incident when I begged him not to. Still pissed, I would have rather not see his face for a while. As luck would have it, we were paired to patrol ourselves on the walls. Dracus was off to... none of us knew where. Serious business, he had called it. Enrique was charged with patrolling the campus grounds. Jasper was back at the cabin where Theo and I had been attacked, hoping to find some clue of whether the recent killings were connected to Dante. Theo was in a nearby village where there were murmurs about some mysterious newcomer.
The thought of Theo going to that village alone almost had me breaking out in hives. What if it was Dante? Theo shouldnât take him on alone. But the team was spread thin. With things being kept hushed, we couldnât bring anyone in. Not even campus security really knew why council members were patrolling outside the walls. That was their job. Hopefully, we could snag that poisonous serpent Dante soon so things could go back to normal... normal by our standards, anyway.
âYou think you can give me the cold shoulder forever?â Renâs question was laced with amusement and it irritated the hell out of me.
Holding up my night vision binocularsâbecause I didnât have the luxury of impeccable nocturnal shifter sightâI peered into the distance, ignoring him. He stepped in front of me and I huffed. âReal mature, Ren. Weâre working. How about keeping this professional?â
âThereâs no one out here but us.â
âSo what? Doesnât mean we should just stand here and chat.â
He plucks the binoculars from my fingers. âFiona, please just talk to me. You know Iâll hear anything and anyone coming so relax.â
I looked skyward. âI donât want to. Iâll go check out the left side again, you can stay here.â I didnât get far. He had my arm in a firm yet gentle grip.
âFiona, I hate it when you donât talk to me.â
âThatâs funny considering that youâre such a lone wolf.â
He scowled. âI make an exception for your company.â
His eyes were moving over my face, beseechingly. He almost wore me down. Chin jutting out, I harrumphed. âWell, Iâm not out here to keep you company, Ren. Iâm doing my job as a council member. I suggest you do the same.â Tugging out of his hold, I stomped off.
Teasing laughter danced around me the further I marched away. Damn him for being amused. Iâd wandered further from the wall, not really looking for anything. If Ren said there was no one in the vicinity, I believed him. Plus, I hadnât picked up any extra energy. The coast seemed to be clear. For now.
I stopped and leaned against a tree trunk. My mood was so down in the dumps, I wasnât even creeped out about standing alone in the dark. A gust of wind caressed my skin and ruffled my hair.
